The Metropolitan Organization (TMO) leaders and others in their communities have been detained and deported while at work, after dropping their children off at school, and upon calling the police for help after experiencing domestic violence. In response, TMO organized more than 15 'Know Your Rights' workshops across Houston with 1,500 community members.
Experienced immigration lawyers presented information about the new enforcement of immigration laws and what it means for families and immigrant rights. They gave clear advice, participated in small group conversations with immigrant families, and responded to participants’ questions individually and in small groups.
Those in attendance were given informational guides such as Family Safety Kits to protect children, spouses, and assets in the event of the detention or deportation of their loved ones.
Despite increased federal funding for the unconstitutional detention of law-abiding immigrants, TMO remains committed to building trust and developing leaders who will stand in solidarity with immigrant families, working to ensure their safety and ability to thrive.
