After 15 schools closed at the end of the 2023-2024 school year, COPS/Metro leaders participated in a heated public meeting on the potential closure of Carvajal Elementary School. Parents voiced concerns about losing their community and native tongue fostered through the school’s dual language program.

“We are greatly concerned about the current state of Carvajal Elementary,” said COPS/Metro Leader Esmeralda Rodriguez. “Carvajal is located in one of the poorest zip codes (78207) in the city. We understand the reality of the situation facing Carvajal.  The school has to do something different.”

COPS/Metro is calling on the San Antonio Independent School District to reimagine Carvajal together with the community to ensure investment in a high-performing school for our children. This includes creating a public transition plan to build a new K-8 school, guaranteed transportation, and clear communication every step of the way. 

COPS/Metro leaders are also working with the district to ensure that parents and community organizations that offer resources to the students are welcomed into the schools as partners and not excluded from the decision making process.
