California Collaborative for Immigrant Justice celebrates the release of Bay Area community organizer Guillermo Medina Reyes, who was accompanied by 100 community members to his appointment with ICE in San Jose. ICE intended to re-detain him until U.S. District Judge Rita Lin granted him a Temporary Restraining Order. 

Despite official rhetoric about focusing on violent criminals, the overwhelming majority (65%) of people booked by ICE this year have no record of criminal convictions, nor of violence (93%). The libertarian think-tank CATO Institute examined US Custom & Border Patrol data from January 12 to June 14 and note that roaming the streets and workplaces to apprehend immigrants not only increased dramatically, the manner it has done so is "indiscriminate, unfocused, and chaotic."  More from CATO.

After California Gov. Gavin Newsom proposed to drop undocumented immigrants from the state health insurance rolls, 120 California IAF leaders and allies traveled to the capitol by bus and persuaded legislators to restore access to the program.

“Immigrants pay taxes. They work in our communities with no safety nets," said COPA (Communities Organized for Relational Power in Action) Leader Mary Litel Walsh. “We came hundreds of miles from all over the state...took time off of work and away from our families to be here today. Why?

Because we need our legislators to fight for us.
