NCG Sounds the Alarm as New Federal Mandates Strain Churches Filling SNAP Gaps

State officials estimate 27,000 people lost their SNAP benefits for food stamps on May 1 due to new work or volunteer requirements, and churches and non-profits are rushing to help people get food or obtain food stamps….

“It’s like our churches are the first stop of the social safety net. Children’s directors, Sunday school teachers, they’re being asked, ‘where do I go get insurance right now? How do I fill out this paperwork? Where do I go for a pantry? They’re becoming the navigators of a system that doesn’t feel like it’s very deep right now, so we’ve been working really hard on sharing information across congregations,” said Rae Lathrop, director of Justice and Community Development for the Desert Southwest Conference of the United Methodist Church. Lathrop also represents organization Nevadans For the Common Good.

Rally for the People: NCG Expands their Constituency to Confront Federal Cuts to Healthcare and Food Assistance

Over 150 faith and community leaders gathered on December 7th at a “Rally for the People” organized by Nevadans for the Common Good (NCG) at St. James the Apostle Catholic Church on the Historic Westside of Las Vegas. The rally was a response to the costly and harmful federal government shutdown recognizing that though the shutdown has ended, suffering for Nevadans has not.

NCG Gains Commitments from Nevada State Senator, Community Partners to Expand Primary Care

Nevadans for the Common Good (NCG) engaged 700 people in their year-long Health Care Seminar Series to educate the public and to advance a concrete strategy for improving health care access.

At their 10th culminating seminar, NCG gained pivotal commitments from State Senator Fabian Doñate and community partners to:

  • increase funding for Community Health Workers, and
  • build a stronger network between trusted community organizations, such as congregations, and reputable, accessible health care providers.
