Together Louisiana & IAF Secure $500M in Flood Relief

Just days before Congress adjourns for October recess, the word among lobbyists was that a proposal for flood recovery funding for Louisiana would not even get a vote for inclusion in the continuing resolution (short term budget). It was the last opportunity to secure funding for flood recovery before the lame duck session.

Then, according to Together Baton Rouge (TBR), sister IAF organizations across the country began contacting their congressional representatives and senators urging them to support the funding package — across partisan lines. Together Baton Rouge posted a video that, in less than one day, was viewed 55,000 times as leaders quickly spread its message urging people to contact their congressional representatives.

NOVA Sets Record for Training for Living Wage Jobs

The NOVA Workforce Institute of Northeast Louisiana broke their own record in job-placement this month, placing 17 of its graduates in living wage careers. Since 2009, NOVA has placed 461 adults into living wage work, with a projected annual wage impact of $7.4 million. 'Together Louisiana' Statewide Assembly Trains 200 Leaders to Take on Budget Deficit & Food Deserts

Leaders from across Louisiana assembled to learn about their state's $1.6 billion budget deficit, the lack of access to fresh food experienced by over 1 million Louisianans, and how to organize effectively in their local communities for maximum state impact. Elected officials in attendance, including Agricultural Commissioner Mike Strain (R) and Democrats from North & Southern Louisiana agreed to work with Together Louisiana to address the budget and food access.

The Advocate \"Too many people in Louisiana are in jail, a Baton Rouge group of faith and community leaders said at a meeting on Friday. But while discussing how to reduce the state's high incarceration rate, some questioned whether new legislation proposed this year is the right path.

The group Together Baton Rouge tackled the topic of incarceration at a meeting Friday, hearing about proposed legislation that aims to keep juveniles out of jail and get drug offenders treatment without forcing them to serve lengthy prison terms.

Jeremiah Launches 3-Pronged GOTV Campaign

To ensure that all eligible voters reach the polls, Jeremiah Group leaders launched a citywide absentee and voter education / registration campaign working with the staff of nursing and independent living homes, high school and college campuses, and neighborhood congregations and businesses. Jeremiah trained home care staff to identify eligible voters, schools and nonprofits to conduct voter registration drives and congregations to mobilize voters in this non-partisan campaign.
