The Complex Task of the Parish

Synopsis

In "The Complex Task of Parish," National Pastoral Life Center Director Msgr. Phillip Murnion argues that the role of the parish is to act as a mediating community that bridges a person's private spiritual life with their public, social responsibilities.  He asserts that authentic parishes prevent Catholics from retreating into privatized religion, by preparing and  facilitating engagement with public life, honest reflection on culture, mutual support, and shared identity. He points to COPS in San Antonio as a real-world example of church life and community organizing working together effectively.
