Demonstrating the power of organized people, Calgary Alliance for the Common Good (Calgary Alliance) packed Knox United Methodist Church with 600 people for its 2025 Mayoral Forum.
“Over the last year, we have been consulting with the members of our constituent organizations, and have heard stories about life in Calgary and what would make it better," said Rev. Kersi Bird, co-chair of the Calgary Alliance Affordable Housing Team.
"From those conversations, we identified five key areas of need: affordable housing, good jobs, mental health, environmental sustainability, and truth and reconciliation.”
Ahead of the elections, leaders shared stories and built public relationships with three leading candidates for mayor based on respect and accountability.
Mayoral candidates committed to:
- Investing $3 million to fund community-led mental health supports
- Working with Calgary Alliance to develop a good jobs strategy and limit contract positions with the city
- Advance the organization’s affordable housing strategy, expand the release of appropriately zoned land for affordable housing, and expand support for renters
- Advance Calgary Alliance’s hard-fought climate strategy
- Set aside land for the Indigenous Gathering Place and develop an Indigenous Council
- Meeting with Calgary Alliance and developing a plan to implement their commitments once elected by the end of January
“Our engagement with the electoral process is both our privilege and our responsibility as citizens,”
said Rev. Bird. “We have a stake in the civic conversation that will decide who will lead our city.”
