After Calgary City Council voted to repeal rezoning without a replacement plan, the Calgary Alliance for the Common Good (CACG) organized a press conference with a coalition of 11 organizations representing tens of thousands of community members, urging leaders to advance clear, responsible solutions to the city’s growing housing crisis.
Through ongoing listening, CACG leaders have heard the human cost of rising housing prices—families struggling to put food on the table, young people delaying starting families, and seniors trapped in homes they can no longer afford, with some facing life-threatening consequences.
At stake is the loss of an estimated $251 million that could have supported nearly 3,000 affordable housing units, following the repeal of inclusionary zoning without a path forward.
Alliance members were active throughout the citywide rezoning debate, testifying at public hearings and bringing forward the voices of their institutions in support of more inclusive affordable housing options.
Looking ahead, CACG is organizing to hold elected officials accountable to their commitment to “repeal and replace,” pushing for a concrete plan and advocating for federal investment to ensure Calgary remains a place where people can afford to live, work, and belong.
